Some people casually say ‘touch wood’ when they speak of something they hope will happen. Others won’t allow peacock feathers into the house. And almost anyone who finds a four-leafed clover will treasure it and keep it. Why? Some superstitions are so ancient and have been practised for so long that they have come to be regarded as just harmless and widely observed ‘customs’, without people realising they are basically superstitions.
In a book full of surprises and revelations, Max Cryer explains the origins of many of the things we commonly say and observe and why we continue to include them in our lives: kissing under the mistletoe, the unlucky number thirteen, the significance of the bridal bouquet, saying ‘bless you’ after sneezing, the hanging of a horseshoe, ‘the Scottish play’, the danger in opals, the Leap Year proposal … so many aspects of our lives are coloured by superstition.

The book Purple Dandelion is the true story of Farida Sultana, an extraordinary Muslim woman and single mother, whose remarkable life began in Bangladesh when as a young girl, she found herself in conflict with her traditional family values and the Islamic culture that prevents girls and women from learning music and arts. Later her arranged marriage to a doctor at the age of 18 took her to war-torn Iran with her husband and young daughter, then to the UK, and finally to New Zealand. Her personal journey included episodes of domestic violence as she sought to find herself and her true role in the world.
Purple Dandelion brings to life the experiences and struggles of some of these courageous women. In recent years Farida has been working in Asian and Middle Eastern countries encouraging women to condemn violence and claim their human rights.

Being a parent can be tough and there are times when you just don’t have all the answers. For parents who find themselves faced with a seemingly endless spiral of conflict, poor behaviour and ineffective discipline, this is the evidence-based parenting program they’ve been waiting for. Divided into 12 sessions, it first focuses on developing a strong relationship between parent and child. Once a firm foundation of parenting strategies has been developed, the program then moves onto effective discipline. The discipline program is designed so that it is self-sustaining and allows the parent to step back from what is often an emotionally charged situation and instead use predetermined consequences. It also emphasises teaching children ownership of their behaviour.
The beauty of this program is that the principles can be used in each of the child’s environments (at home, at school, with grandparents, etc.), while it has also been designed so that any parent can use it as well as those with children who have been diagnosed with behavioural disorders such as ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, or explosive and non-compliant behaviour. It’s a common sense, practical guide to getting your kids back on track and creating a happier home!

The war in the South Pacific saw some of the most grueling fighting of World War Two. Conditions were unpleasant- fetid heat, torrential downpours and hostile flora and fauna- while the Japanese enemy were ruthless and would often fight to the last man. Amphibious warfare, jungle warfare and the need to co-operate with our American ally all meant that new demands were made on New Zealand soldiers. Yet the war in the South Pacific came to be seen as an easy war, generally overlooked (with the exception of Guadalcanal) by historians.
From ignorance of what the soldiers were called upon to endure, the notion arose that service in the South Pacific was somehow less worthy than the ‘real war’ in Europe against the Nazis. This attitude continued in the post-war world and today the soldiers of 3NZ Division are all but forgotten. Pacific Star sets the record straight, shedding new light on the sacrifices and tribulations which the soldiers of 3NZ Division had to endure in the service of the Allied cause.

Last Train to Paradise describes the halcyon days of New Zealand rail, some of which the author was fortunate enough to experience personally. The ‘name’ trains and journeys cover a considerable period of New Zealand’s history, from the late 1800s, through the ‘golden’ era of train travel (the first four decades of the 20th century). Among the special journeys covered are the Prince of Wales’ royal progress through New Zealand in 1920, and travelling the ‘Test Match Special’ to enjoy the rugby in 1956. The book also includes a wide variety of fascinating and unfamiliar photographs, not just of the trains themselves but also of the characters who travelled in them.

In his ‘thinking traveller’s tour’, David St John Thomas journeys by rail and ‘Little Car’ around Britain, exploring the fascinating and diverse character of Britain today. He reflects on Britain, Britishness, the British people and how they have changed, not always for the worse, over the fifty-odd years he has known them as an author and a publisher.
Taking in places as various as beaches, mountain moors, industrial and early Christian sites, great hotels, art galleries, canals and cycleways, meeting people- famous ones, friends, gardeners, railwaymen, craftsmen, bus conductors- who enrich his journey with their stories and observations, and drawing on literature and history, he discovers the true heartbeat of the country. The result is a narrative that surprises, amuses and engages, as well as offering a treasure trove of facts, anecdotes and new perspectives on this extraordinary nation.
