Expertise, experience, and a story to tell

We publish authors with hard-won wisdom — experts and people with lived experience who have something a defined readership needs to hear.

Writing for children?

This page is for adult non-fiction only. Picture books, children’s and young adult titles are published by our children’s imprint, EK Books, and must be submitted there — anything sent through this form can’t be considered.

01 · The brief

What we’re looking for

Expert-led non-fiction that gives a reader tools they can start using straight away.

01Mental health and psychology
02Wellbeing and better living
03Communication, relationships and personal development
04Travel, place and cultural understanding
05Practical non-fiction grounded in professional expertise or lived experience
06Books that make complex ideas useful, engaging and accessible

The strongest proposals combine a clear idea, a defined readership, and an author whose expertise or experience makes them uniquely qualified to write the book.

On memoir

We publish memoir, selectively. It must be exceptionally well written, carry a distinctive human voice, and connect one person’s story to larger themes that matter to a wider readership. The experience itself is rarely enough — what matters is the insight and the literary power the author draws from it.

02 · Before you send

What we’re not looking for

Worth reading first. It will save us both time.

Books built around an all-encompassing personal philosophy that claims to explain — or solve — life, consciousness, society or the universe without a credible foundation in evidence, scholarship or recognised expertise.

Prose that feels generated rather than lived. AI may be a useful tool, but it cannot substitute for original thought, earned authority or an unmistakably individual voice. We want authors who are willing to write, not merely prompt.

Children’s books of any kind — picture books, junior fiction, young adult. These belong with our children’s imprint, EK Books, not here.

One more thing

Memoirs of surviving specific illnesses such as cancer are not something we are able to take on at the moment. We receive a great many, and behind each one is something a person lived through and found the courage to write down. Saying no to those manuscripts is the hardest part of this job, and it is a decision about our list rather than about the book or the life in it.

03 · The partnership

We go to battle for our authors

Publishing well is an act of partnership.

We work closely with our writers to sharpen their ideas, strengthen their manuscripts, make beautiful books, and place them in front of readers around the world.

We bring editorial expertise, international distribution, sales, publicity and marketing. We ask authors for openness, ambition and a willingness to work with us.

You deal directly with the people making the decisions — a small team across six countries, not a committee. We say yes rarely. When we do, we commit.
