Nathan James Thomas, originally from New Zealand, bought a ticket for 20,000 kilometres on the Greyhound Bus network in Australia when he was 17 years old. Over the next decade he lived in China, Spain, Poland, and Hungary, visiting and experiencing dozens of other countries along the way.

In 2014, Nathan founded the digital travel magazine Intrepid Times as a vehicle for sharing stories from the road and as an excuse to meet and interview his favorite writers. It has since grown into a thriving global community of thousands of writers and travellers. Nathan’s own travel writing has been published in places like Roads and Kingdoms and Outpost Magazine.

With his two previous Exisle Publishing titles, Fearless Footsteps and Travel Your Way, Nathan presents a vision of travel that is both challenging and humbling, an experience not of finding yourself, but of losing yourself and becoming immersed in the places where you find yourself.

Discover the truth behind the digital nomad dream and master your own location-independent life.

The allure of becoming a digital nomad has inspired many to leave their jobs and embrace a life that is both global and free from the daily 9-to-5 grind. Picture traveling to exotic destinations, connecting with fascinating people, and embarking on endless adventures―all while earning a living with just a few keystrokes.

However, many find themselves disillusioned in pursuit of this dream. The realities of a digital nomad life are far from simple, and amid ongoing global uncertainty, the complexities of life on the move have become even more daunting to navigate.

Yet, with the complexities of today’s world arise unprecedented opportunities: remote work has transformed from a rarity to a viable option within reach for many. As companies compete for top talent, opportunities for workers across industries to establish themselves as digital nomads are more abundant than ever.

In Untethered, you’ll uncover the secrets to crafting a digital nomad lifestyle in today’s complex world. Step-by-step guidance will show you how to move from wherever you are now to a fully location-independent reality as a freelancer, remote worker, or entrepreneur.

“The word ‘untethered’ is so evocative, clearly suggestive of freedom and letting go, and it’s the perfect title for a guide to ‘living the digital nomad life in an uncertain world’. The author is a veteran travel author, founder of the Intrepid Times literary hub, and has been a digital nomad for the past 10 years. He’s well qualified to offer advice and he does so in a chatty manner.”
