Dogs In Action

Working dogs and their stories

Humans are indebted to dogs. We get them to do all the jobs we can’t do; we expect them to save our lives, uphold the law, find our missing, comfort our sick and elderly, be our eyes and ears, watch over our families, move our stock, entertain us and keep us warm – all for a bowl of food, the tug of a toy and a pat at the end of the day.

Dogs should be revered and recognised for achieving great feats to improve human life, and this book unashamedly does just that. It tells the stories of a number of dogs, from their initial selection for work, to their training, their work experiences and their relationships with their handlers and masters. A long-time dog-owner and journalist, Maria Alomajan fleshes out each story with colourful and heartwarming anecdotes based on her interviews with the owners of these selfless animals, together with a host of charming photographs.

Among the animals profiled in the book are dogs working for the police and customs; farm dogs; therapy and guide dogs; search and detection dogs (including cancer, cadaver, truffle, avalanche, LandSAR and USAR dogs); acting, model and show dogs; sled dogs and mascots.

Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship

Establishing Respect and Control for English and Western Riders

When Clinton Anderson wrote the book Downunder Horsemanship: Establishing Respect and Control for English and Western Riders, he was an up-and-coming clinician, and his goal was to create a practical training guide for everyday horse people to learn to better communicate with their horses. Ten years later, Clinton is an internationally recognized clinician and the book has lived up to his goal, having helped thousands of horse owners learn to be better leaders and enjoy their horses to the fullest. The two riders in this book, one Western and one English, experience problems and setbacks we can all relate to, and they and their horses are exactly what keep the book relevant. Through series photographs taken at the time and personal essays, you gain first-hand insights from the riders about their difficulties, breakthroughs, challenges, and rewards. If you have a passion to be a better horseman and a desire to learn how to effectively communicate with your horse, this book will prove to be a valuable resource to refer to, time and again.

Black Obsession

The All Black’s quest for World Cup success

To coincide with the commencement of the 2009 Bledisloe Cup Series and with the Rugby World Cup just around the corner, Exisle Publishing proudly releases Gregor Paul’s controversial new book Black Obsession. This explosive book examines why it is that the world’s greatest Rugby nation continues to fail in their quest for World Cup glory.

Since the first World Cup in 1987, the All Blacks have amassed a winning record that is far superior to any other country. Yet by the time the next World Cup rolls around in 2011, it will be 24 years since the All Blacks have been world champions. How can that be? This very readable book draws some provocative conclusions on why New Zealand no longer produces great leaders and why rugby remains such an important part of the national psyche. Part travel guide, part social history and part self-help manual, it is the ideal book for all those fans who can’t help steering conversations towards All Black World Cup failures.

The incredible life of Louise Fox

This is a story of an ordinary girl from Germany who became caught up in the inner workings of the Nazi war machine.  Louise Fox had grown up while the Nazis steadily took full control of the country and like so many of her age group Nazism was considered to be just normal.  As a teenager she was first involved in the effort to provide anti-aircraft equipment for the Luftwaffe and to kit out Rommel for the North African campaign.  She was a hard worker and was promoted to the rank of captain in the Luftwaffe’s supreme command headquarters in Potsdam, near Berlin.  She caught Hermann Goering’s eye when he awarded her a medal for bravery in the capture of a downed British airman, and was sent to work in the Air Ministry making appointments and assisting Goering.  As the war intensified on two fronts Louise was transferred back to Potsdam to manage the huge task of securing appropriate ammunition supplies for the Luftwaffe, a job she held for the rest of the war.

She married an airman who three weeks later was killed in action.  Louise was posted with her colleagues to the Eastern Front and escaped with them all in Hitler’s “strategic retreat” ahead of the Red Army.  In the last few months of the war she was captured and imprisoned by the Americans.  She escaped and began an event-filled 1,000-kilometre hike to the safety of relatives.  Life was difficult after the war and Louise entered the black market and was imprisoned.  She eventually found a pen pal in Tasmania and much to the amazement of friends migrated there – selling Volkswagens to make a living.
